Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need A Website?

A website is a worthwhile investment for many businesses, but the existing business model must be considered before commissioning a website. For example, a restaurant may benefit from advertising its location, its premises and its menu online - the objective being to offer customers the opportunity to ring the restaurant and make a booking. A fish and chip shop may see less of a benefit in having a website as its customers are already likely to be local and know its product.

For businesses that intend to trade and communicate with their customers online, with regional, national or global reach, the decision is clear - they will certainly benefit from investing in a website.

Will You Meet Me To Discuss My Design Requirements?

Cogniworks is based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK, and will make every effort to establish the best communication possible to discuss your design requirements. Meeting in person at least once is always preferable, but if this is not possible then telephones, email, instant messaging and any other medium available will be employed to bridge the gap.

Who Can See My Website?

Everyone. Everywhere!

If that is your intention, great! Sit back and relax, and let the world visit your new website. If you need to focus on your local area, extra care needs to be taken to mention this in the headings and text of your website so that visitors can quickly establish whether what you have to offer is relevant to them.

Where Is My Website Published?

Your website, like many others, is kept on a computer in a data center. This facility aims to keep their computers running constantly and relies on very fast connections to the internet so that they can cope with the influx of visitors to all the websites they host. From here, everyone can see your website. It is not necessary to keep a computer of your own connected to the internet all day to have your own website.

How Much Will It Cost To Run My Website?

Running costs for a website are minimal. There is an annual fee of between £10 and £20 to reserve a domain name (e.g. www.nameofwebsite.co.uk) for your use, and an annual fee starting at £50 for keeping your website published online (i.e. hosting in a data center) that can increase for frequently visited or demanding websites.

How Much Will It Cost To Build And Maintain My Website?

Every website has different goals, and therefore different requirements. How your website looks and what it does will heavily influence its design and complexity. A small, lightweight website will cost as little as £500, whereas a site of great complexity and depth may cost £10,000 or more.

Should your website require maintenance of any kind once it has been built and published on the internet this will be charged by the hour.

Why Should I Hire Cogniworks To Build My Website?

Or "My nephew / neighbour / pet chiwawa says he can make websites for £50!"

Your website and in turn, your image and reputation as an individual, society or business is in public view 24 hours a day, every day, to the whole world. Appearance is but one facet of your website's responsibilities; it must also function smoothly, reliably, and securely. Cogniworks is backed by years of industrial experience and education in computing, and is ready to deliver on all these needs. Your website is an investment - how much is it really worth to you?

I've Been Told I Need To Build My Website With "Flash", Is This True?

Don't do it: the contents of your website will be invisible to search engines like Google and Yahoo. What does this mean? If your business is called Widgets Ltd and your website is www.widgets.co.uk then your customers might well find you if they use Google to search for "widgets". However, if you sell a particular widget called The Unconfusatron and your customers search Google for "unconfusatron" your website is much less likely to show up in the search results - this is because any mention of The Unconfusatron on your website is hidden inside the Flash code that Google can't read.

The use of Flash also affects a website's accessibility (see next question).

Do Disability Laws Apply To Websites?

Yes. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) seeks to ensure that websites are accessible and useful to as many people as possible. You can read more on the subject in this Business Link article.
